How to Find Profitable Long Tail Keywords that Dominate Google Search

The importance of long tail keywords in SEO campaigns cannot simply be stressed enough. A lot has been written, read and talked about it. Even though it can be hard to convince a good portion of the clients that pursuing long tail keywords can actually lower the search volume and drive more traffic to the website, there is no denying the fact that this is a much better long term strategy than going for appealing core terms that have a high search volume.

The whole comparison sounds slightly complicated, and maybe even a little skewed, but once you get to understand the inner dynamics of pursuing long tail keywords, you will be sold on the idea of resorting to this particular SEO strategy.

The Struggle to Find Long Tail Keywords

The big challenge is not to persuade the clients to go for long tail keywords and forget about appealing core terms. That is perhaps the easiest task in the whole SEO campaign. What is really difficult is coming up with valid ways to identify profitable long tail keywords that can dominate the Google search engine.

Undoubtedly, identifying core keywords is a much easier job than finding out which long tail key terms will bring you the gold. If you are struggling to find long tail keywords, then there is absolutely no reason for you to lose hope. There are plenty of tricks and techniques to master the art of identifying long tail keywords.

You simply need to be focused and patient throughout the whole SEO campaign to make this strategy work.

Finding Useful Long Tail Keywords Is Not Expensive Per Se

There is no shortage of places when it comes to looking for excellent long tail keyword candidates. The common misconception regarding pursuing long tail keywords is that the job requires plenty of finance. This is not true. Huge sums of money are not prerequisites to cracking the long tail keyword code.

You do not necessarily have to drain your wallets and empty your company’s bank accounts to make this strategy work to perfection. All you need to do is have a little bit of faith in Google’s Keyword Tool or other equally impressive free services. You do not have to be concerned about the number of services. The variety will take you by surprise for sure.

Places to Find Long Tail Keywords

The following are examples of the most popular sources that people resort to when trying to dig up long tail keyword suggestions.

1) Google Suggest and Related Words

People usually use the Google Suggest and Related words to expand their search and look for more browsing options. Who would have ever thought that this simple Google feature can turn out to be a money maker for businesses around the world?

The idea here is quite simple. Whenever you type in a keyword, Google provides you with a short list of related words that actual people have typed in. Since these words are typed by real people, it allows you to stumble upon long tail keywords that are worth pursuing.

That being said, not all the words in the suggestions list are useful and appropriate key words. Do filter out the words before taking them aboard your SEO campaign.

2) Analyzing Your Competition

Studying your competition can yield several dividends. For one, it allows you to have an insight into all the developments that your rivals have made ahead of you, and thus it gives you an opportunity to catch up quickly.

If you are doing your homework on your competitors, especially those which are technically more advanced than you, then you are likely to find out that your competitors already have an established set of long tail keywords that are reaping rewards for them.

Keeping the jealousy and envy aside, you need to realize that learning about the innovative techniques used by your competitors makes your task much easier. You now know exactly which long tail keywords to incorporate in your SEO campaign.

This, however, does not give you the license to completely mimic the activities of your competitors. By learning about their keywords, you can have a fundamental idea of what you should be looking to target.

If you end up using the exact same keywords as they do, you will always be a step behind. The best place to look for long tail keywords used by your competitors is in their meta tags, titles, snippets and other descriptions.

3) Knowledge from Natural Language

When people make queries, they often use the same language that they use for making web searches. Therefore, it is important that you carefully observe the words, phrases and sentences that your prospective clients use in forums, threads, emails and other sources of discussion and education.

More often than not, these words will be a direct indicator of the kind of long tail keywords that you need to be pursuing. This is a technique that is seldom used by SEO experts, mainly because it defies the general conventions associated with SEO. All you have to do to make this strategy work is head over to comment threads and pick up keywords that people post repeatedly.

4) Professional Tools

Relying on the aforementioned tactics will do your SEO campaign a world of favours, but it will not push it across the finishing line. For that, you need the services of professional tools, both paid and free of cost.

Many of these tools are designed for the specific purpose of helping you find long tail keywords that are easily missed out by SEO marketers. Names of the most commonly used professional tools are listed below. You are highly recommended to give at least a couple of them a try.

a) Ubersuggest

b) Google’s Adwords Keyword Tool

  1. Good post, Editorial Staff. You mention finding out which long-tail keywords competitors are using. How do you find this out? By studying their web copy and making assumptions?

    1. Thanks Andrew. Appreciate you stopping by.

Tools like SEMRush, SpyFu allow you to see what your competitors are ranking for. I think I covered the option in my review of semrush here love-semrush-review/

  2. There is one more supremely good tool called Keyword Snatcher that gets at least ten times more Google Suggest and Related terms that Ubersuggest or Try it … it’s just awesome. I never had a clue before how many keywords Google hides from us!

Besides its a tool with just a one-time payment so no monthly payouts!

    1. I tested out the tool. It looks like the tool is throwing out a lot of keywords that have little to no search volume. Its not like these keywords are traffic keywords or money keywords. They are just phrases use in search nothing more. while users might find value in the tool, I do not believe it can complete with the resources listed in this article and also I do not believe its worth the price.

      1. That’s strange, coz I found a truckload of really worthwhile long-tail keywords, hence my euphoria! Maybe its the kind of topics we’re looking for that matters. Hmmm!
